Fukasawa has created the 130 chair series inspired by the classic Thonet bentwood chairs. “First, I perceived these chairs as design classics. But then I realised that their main quality lies in their sustainability and environmental friendliness: there is no material wastage, and the chairs are very lightweight,” says Fukasawa. “They meet all the requirements for a perfect product. I deeply respect this and therefore I have tried to base my designs for Thonet on the same philosophy. I wanted to create something very simple, something uncomplicated for Thonet.” The chair series is made up of solid-wood chairs and armchairs available in plain wood, with padded seats, or with fully upholstered seats and backrests. All models are available in beech and oak. The frame itself is composed of natural or stained beech or oak while the seats and backrests feature a textile-varnish finish.

808 lounge chair by formstelle for thonet.

Munich-based design studio Formstelle has created a lounge chair for Thonet that combines comfort with customization. A hard outer shell supports a soft quilted seat upholstered in a specially commissioned fabric made in collaboration with German textile manufacture Rohi. Called ’Soul’, the textile is made using a high-quality new woolen yarn and a multidimensional honeycomb structure that lends the fabric depth. Customers can choose from six different color palettes, each consisting of material options in leather, fabric and formed fleece, with matching decorative seams. A clever mechanism allows users to adjust the position of the chair while an auto-return spring assures that the chair always comes back to its original position. The angle of backrest can also be adjusted from an upright to a fully reclined position. The swivel frame of the lounge chair is available in wood with bentwood elements, or with flat steel or tubular steel in various colors. designer: formstelle producer: thonet introduced: imm cologne 2015 period: 2015

Leia lamp. Naoto fukasawa.

The Naoto Fukasawa Leia lamp was inspired by the sophisticate of the grand piano. The Leia lamps come in either a high-gloss black or white, including a family of standing, table and reading lights. The body of the lamp is made of an impressive opal, sanitized art glass that can be dimmed or switched on or off independently, depending on what kind of illumination you want to achieve. The body is also an unintentional energy-saver. The base of the lights contrasts distinctly with the cover above it. The head of the warmly lit, halogen reading light can be tilted to allow the light beam to reflect at 35º. designer: naoto fukasawa producer: belux material: opal glass period: 2000s
