Ground – breaking lamp sets new bar for LED task lights.
Maybe LED is king until a newer technology proves otherwise. out with the bluish or yellow-tinged glare – the Element lamp produces neutral, 3500K white light (and very bright), with a large footprint. its single LED casts just one shadow, unlike other lamps that contain rows or clusters of LEDs creating multiple shadows on the work surface. The 60,000-hour bulb will probably never need replacing, but just in case, it is user serviceable. best of all, it consumes less than 7 watts of energy while vibrantly lighting up a tabletop.
An award-winner in design.

The double-decker is back. Scrapped by Ken Livingston in 2005 – he also ordered articulated ( locals call it a “bendy” ) buses in 2002 but it seems no Londoner likes them.
Boris Johnson’s competition to design an heir to the Routemaster, the double-decker, has yielded two winners, and an eccentric convoy of runners-up. Our favorite is the Foster design but the article implies that the Capoco may have been selected by the bureaucrats before the competition.

Mission Motors builds the world’s fastest electric production motorcycle, Mission One.
Designed for Mission Motors, the bike was unveiled at the TED 2009 conference at Long Beach, California, today.
The announcement formally debuts Mission Motors, a San Francisco-based company geared to redefine the world of performance motorcycles. The company was founded in 2007 by entrepreneurs Forrest North (CEO), Edward West (President), and Mason Cabot (VP of Engineering).
Building on their backgrounds in engineering, a desire to develop clean vehicles, and a passion for motorcycles, the Mission Motors founders developed a proprietary high energy lithium ion battery pack that could provide both the range and acceleration needed for a high performance sportbike. The company (named Hum Cycles at the time) placed second in the transportation category of the 2007 California Cleantech Open, the largest cleantech business plan competition on the West Coast.

Porchdog House Prototype, Biloxi, Mississippi, (August 2009 Completion):
Biloxi Model Homes are affordable prototype houses designed for the Architecture for Humanity Model Home Program for families in East Biloxi whose houses were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The proposition of raising a home up to 12’ above the ground disrupts the traditional notion of the Gulf Coast streetscape and affiliated porch culture. Compact with an efficient stacked living program, the metal-clad Porchdog house is raised above the ground and is essentially open at the ground level, but still incorporates a street level porch. Other ground-level elements are an entry stair, enclosed storage volume, and parking area. The Porchdog house is a refuge that still opens itself to the social structure of the city, minimizing its impact on the ground and while providing the requisite protection from a potential Category 4 storm surge event. Operable metal louvered shutters provide light control and storm security for aluminum framed window walls at the east and west elevations.

Phillipe Starck’s latest — a plastic chair — earned it’s name on the first sketch. Mr. Impossible. The designer said it couldn’t be made. The challenge being the weld. Using existing methods to weld the seat and the legs would create an unsightly seam. Kartell’s engineers had to go the blue water route. The key, a very big laser.
A most inviting chair with an organic design that inspires comfort, neatness and style. It takes on a new technological challenge with highly sophisticated processing methods that consist in the welding of two shells: the transparent structure and the seat, in a full-colored and translucent version, are joined together making them indestructible and guarantee a truly surprising design effect.
