On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the perpetually innovative Shell Chair (CH07), Carl Hansen & Son has partnered with Maharam, the leading North American textile resource, to curate a unique collection showcasing the stylish versatility of this iconic piece. Maharam’s diverse range of textiles, including homespun wool textures, re-editioned designs of the Wiener Werkstätte and Alexander Girard, and collaborations with Hella Jongerius and Paul Smith.
The Shell Chair has long been viewed as one of Hans J. Wegner’s strongest designs. It first saw the light of day in 1963, but it took 35 years before it enjoyed its popular breakthrough and received numerous design awards. Through its unique silhouette and superior comfort, Wegner demonstrated that he had truly achieved what he had set out to do: create the ideal shell chair.
Shell Chair CH07 features form-pressed plywood shells. The 3 legs consist of a laminated construction, the 2 front legs are made of one continuous piece and the hind leg is a separate element. To enhance the comfort, Wegner added 2 upholstered cushions which are fastened to the shell with screws from the back.
For this special anniversary edition, twenty special Shell Chairs, each with a different Maharam textile are offered in your choice of wood & finish options.
